After-Hours Emergencies

When your pet faces an emergency, every minute matters. Bethel Mill Animal Hospital does not offer after-hours emergency care, so we have gathered trusted emergency vet referrals for our clients.

During our regular hours, please call us first at 856-589-7388. When we are closed, contact one of the emergency hospitals listed here directly.

How to Recognize a Pet Emergency

Some situations need immediate veterinary attention. If your dog or cat shows any of the following signs, treat it as an emergency and seek care right away.

  • Difficulty breathing, choking, or pale or blue gums
  • Severe bleeding or bleeding that will not stop
  • Collapse, sudden weakness, or an inability to stand
  • Seizures or loss of consciousness
  • Suspected poisoning or toxic ingestion
  • Straining to urinate or an inability to urinate, especially in male cats
  • A swollen or hard abdomen, or repeated unproductive retching
  • Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or signs of severe pain
  • Major trauma, such as a fall, car accident, or animal attack
  • Signs of heatstroke, such as heavy panting and distress
  • Trouble during labor or delivery
  • A sudden inability to walk or use the back legs
When you are unsure how serious a problem is, it is always safest to call. An emergency team can help you decide whether your pet needs to be seen right away.

What to Do in a Pet Emergency

Staying calm and acting quickly gives your pet the best support. These steps can help in a stressful moment.

  • Call the emergency hospital before you leave, so their team can prepare.
  • For suspected poisoning, call a poison control hotline right away.
  • Handle your pet gently, since pain can cause even a sweet pet to bite.
  • Transport cats in a carrier and larger dogs on a firm blanket or board.
  • Bring any medications, plus the toxin or its packaging if poisoning is possible.
  • Do not give human medication or induce vomiting without professional guidance.
  • Drive carefully, because arriving safely matters most.
